On ice in New England

Friday, December 12, 2008

Here in the Litchfield Hills, we had our first real ice storm of the winter last night. The internet has been down for hours, so I have no idea when this will post. The cable people are "on the way!" And so is my 80th birthday if I'm lucky enough to live that long. Put it this way, I'm not watching the clock -- in either case.

When I moved into this country house a little over a year ago, the Realtor was quick to feature the propane generator out back. I thanked him of course, but my first private thought was: That's a little much, isn't it? It's not like this is Alaska. Oh, the naive Southern transplant to New England. One of my Carolina friends remarked, "But Todd. You lived in Manhattan all those years. How different can it be?" I snapped, "A lot. In New York, the power lines are underground, and somebody else shovels the snow."
